Quick answer

A chimney should change your kitchen's air about 10 times an hour. Multiply kitchen volume in cubic metres by 10, and add 20–30% for Indian cooking with tadka and frying. A 10 × 8 × 10 ft kitchen (about 22.7 m³) needs roughly 280 m³/h, so a 1,000–1,200 m³/h chimney gives plenty of headroom. Match chimney width to your hob: 60 cm for 2–3 burners, 90 cm for 4.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure kitchen length, width and height in feet.
  2. Choose your cooking style.
  3. Choose how many burners your hob has.

Formula

Suction needed (m³/h) = Kitchen volume (m³) × 10 air changes per hour × 1.25 for Indian cooking

1 cubic foot = 0.0283 m³. Width: 60 cm for 2–3 burners, 90 cm for 4+ burners.

These are typical figures for Indian homes. Check the product spec sheet, and ask an electrician or installer before you buy or fit anything.

Frequently asked questions

What suction power chimney is good for Indian kitchens?
For most Indian homes, 1,000–1,400 m³/h is comfortable. Higher suction clears smoke faster but is noisier and costs more.
Filterless or baffle filter?
Filterless chimneys need less cleaning and suit heavy Indian cooking; baffle filters are cheaper and washable.
