Quick answer

Diamonds are priced per carat, so total price = carat weight × price per carat, and the per-carat price itself rises at round weights like 0.5, 0.75 and 1 carat. A 0.90-carat stone can cost noticeably less than a 1.00-carat one that looks almost the same size. GST is 1.5% on a loose cut diamond and 3% on diamond jewellery.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the carat weight and the price per carat you were quoted.
  2. Choose natural or lab-grown, and loose or set.
  3. Add the setting cost to see the final price with GST.

Frequently asked questions

Why does price per carat jump at 1 carat?
Demand for round weights is high, so sellers price 1.00-carat stones at a premium over 0.90–0.99 carat.
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes, chemically and physically, but they cost much less and resale value is low. Ask for an IGI or GIA report either way.
What GST applies to diamonds?
1.5% on cut and polished loose diamonds and 3% on diamond jewellery.
