Quick answer

A RAW photo is about 1.2 MB per megapixel and a JPEG about 0.35 MB, so a 24 MP camera makes about 29 MB RAW and 8 MB JPEG files. Video uses its bitrate: 100 Mbps 4K is about 750 MB a minute and needs a V30 card; 200 Mbps or more needs V60 or V90. Shooting 500 RAW photos and 20 minutes of 100 Mbps video needs about 30 GB, so a 64 GB card with spare room.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your camera's megapixels and photo format.
  2. Add how many photos and minutes of video you take in a shoot.
  3. Pick the video bitrate from your camera settings.

Frequently asked questions

What does V30 mean?
A minimum sustained write speed of 30 MB/s, enough for video up to about 240 Mbps in practice. V60 is 60 MB/s and V90 is 90 MB/s.
One big card or several smaller ones?
Two smaller cards reduce the risk of losing a whole shoot if a card fails.
Does the card affect burst shooting?
Yes. A faster card clears the camera's buffer quicker, so you can keep shooting.
