Quick answer

Paintable area = 2 × (length + width) × height, minus doors and windows. Interior emulsion covers roughly 100–140 sq ft per litre per coat, depending on the brand and wall. A 12 × 10 ft room with a 10 ft ceiling, one door and one window has about 400 sq ft of wall, so two coats need about 7 litres of paint.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure room length, width and wall height.
  2. Count doors and windows (we deduct 21 sq ft per door and 15 sq ft per window).
  3. Check the coverage on the paint tin and set the number of coats.

Formula

Wall area = 2 × (Length + Width) × Height − 21 sq ft per door − 15 sq ft per window

Litres = Area × Coats ÷ Coverage per litre per coat

These are typical figures for Indian homes. Check the product spec sheet, and ask an electrician or installer before you buy or fit anything.

Frequently asked questions

Yes for new plaster, a big colour change or patched walls. One coat of primer usually covers 90–120 sq ft per litre.
