Quick answer

For a laptop in 2026, 16 GB is the sensible minimum for most people: browsing with many tabs, office work and video calls run smoothly. 8 GB works only for light use. Photo editing, programming and gaming want 16–32 GB, and video editing, 3D or virtual machines 32 GB or more. On phones, 8 GB is plenty for most users. Buy a little more if you keep devices for 5 years.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the device and what you mostly use it for.
  2. Enter how many browser tabs you keep open.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8 GB RAM enough for a laptop?
For light browsing and streaming, yes. For multitasking, office work and video calls, 16 GB is much smoother.
Can I upgrade RAM later?
Many thin laptops have soldered RAM that cannot be upgraded, so buy enough at the start.
Does phone RAM matter?
Less than on laptops. 8 GB keeps apps open longer; above 12 GB rarely makes a difference.
