Quick answer

BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. For Indian adults, health bodies use lower cut-offs than the global WHO scale: 18.5–22.9 is normal, 23–24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese. For example, 65 kg at 1.68 m is a BMI of 23.0, which is overweight on the Asian-Indian scale.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure your height without shoes.
  2. Weigh yourself in the morning, before eating, in light clothing.
  3. BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. Waist size and a doctor's advice matter too.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal BMI for Indians?
For Asian-Indian adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 is considered normal. 23 to 24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese, lower than the global WHO cut-offs of 25 and 30.
Why is the BMI cut-off lower for Indians?
Research shows South Asians tend to carry more body fat and face higher diabetes and heart risk at the same BMI as Western populations, so lower cut-offs are used.
Is BMI accurate?
BMI does not separate muscle from fat, so it can mislabel athletes. Use it alongside waist circumference (under 80 cm for women and 90 cm for men in India) and speak to a doctor about your health.
