Quick answer

Fabric needed depends on the garment, your size and the fabric width. On standard 44-inch Indian fabric, a knee-length kurta needs about 2.5 metres, a saree blouse 0.8 metres, a salwar 2.75 metres and a medium-flare lehenga skirt 3.5 metres. Wider 58-inch fabric needs roughly 30% less; add 10% for prints that must match.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the garment you want stitched.
  2. Check the fabric width printed on the bolt or ask the shop (most Indian cottons are 36 or 44 inches).
  3. Pick your size and whether the print must be matched.
