Lumens measure brightness; watts measure power. LEDs give about 90–110 lumens per watt, CFLs about 60, halogen about 20 and old incandescent bulbs about 15. So 800 lumens, the brightness of a 60 W bulb, needs about 9 W in LED. To replace an old bulb, multiply its watts by 15 for lumens, then divide by 100 for the LED watts.
| Bulb type | Lumens per watt | Watts for 800 lumens |
|---|---|---|
| LED | 90–110 | about 8–9 W |
| CFL | about 60 | about 13–14 W |
| Halogen | about 20 | about 40 W |
| Incandescent | about 15 | about 60 W |
Efficiency varies by brand.
