Quick answer

Measure the fullest part of your seat with feet together. Women's bottoms are sized by hips as well as waist: hips up to 39 inches is M, which is jeans size 28–30. Add your waist to see your waist-to-hip ratio. The WHO treats a ratio of 0.85 or more for women, and 0.90 or more for men, as a sign of higher health risk.

How to measure

  1. Stand with feet together and wrap the tape around the fullest part of your seat.
  2. Add your natural waist, the narrowest point above the belly button.
  3. Read your sizes and your waist-to-hip ratio.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good waist-to-hip ratio?
The WHO links a ratio below 0.85 for women and below 0.90 for men with lower risk. It is one signal, not a diagnosis.
Why do my jeans fit at the waist but not the hips?
Your hip size is larger than your waist size. Buy for hips and take in the waist, or choose a curvy fit.
Do men need hip size?
Rarely. Men's trousers go by waist, but slim fits may feel tight if your hips are much larger than your waist.
