Quick answer

Divide the trip cost, fuel plus tolls and parking, by the number of people sharing. A 300 km trip in a 15 km/l car with petrol at ₹105 uses ₹2,100 of fuel; with ₹400 of tolls the trip costs ₹2,500, or ₹625 each for four people. For a fair carpool, some groups also add a small amount per km to the car owner for wear and tear.

Is wear and tear fair to add?

Yes, for regular carpools. Tyres, service and depreciation cost the owner roughly ₹3–6 per km.

Is carpooling legal in India?

Sharing costs among colleagues or friends is common; charging strangers for rides in a private car can break transport rules.
