Quick answer

Lenses are named by focal length on full frame. Portraits look best at 85 mm (or 50 mm), landscapes at 16–35 mm, street at 35 mm and wildlife at 300 mm or more. Smaller sensors crop the view, so divide by 1.5 on Nikon, Sony and Fujifilm APS-C, by 1.6 on Canon APS-C and by 2 on Micro Four Thirds: an 85 mm look on Canon APS-C needs about a 50 mm lens.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick what you shoot most.
  2. Pick your camera's sensor size.
  3. Look for a lens in the focal length and aperture shown.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good first lens after the kit lens?
A 50 mm f/1.8 (or 35 mm on APS-C) is cheap, sharp and great for portraits and low light.
What does f/1.8 mean?
The aperture. Lower numbers let in more light and blur the background more.
Do I need a macro lens for product photos?
Not for most products. A 50 mm or 85 mm-equivalent lens at f/5.6–f/8 with good light works well.
