Quick answer

Storage fills mostly with photos and videos. A phone photo is about 3–4 MB, a minute of 1080p video about 100 MB and a minute of 4K about 300 MB. Taking 300 photos and 30 minutes of 1080p video a month adds about 50 GB a year. Over 3 years, plus 40 GB of apps and the system, that is about 200 GB, so a 256 GB phone fits.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter how many photos and minutes of video you take each month.
  2. Add the space your apps and games use.
  3. Add how long you keep a device and whether you use cloud backup.

Frequently asked questions

Is 128 GB enough for a phone?
For light camera use and a few apps, yes. If you shoot 4K video or keep years of photos, choose 256 GB.
Does a phone show less storage than advertised?
Yes. The system takes 10–20 GB, so a 128 GB phone has about 110 GB for you.
Is a microSD card a good idea?
If your phone supports one, it is a cheap way to store photos and videos, but apps run best on internal storage.
