Quick answer

The cheaper product to buy is not always cheaper to own. Over 10 years, a ₹32,000 AC using ₹11,000 of power a year costs ₹1.5 lakh in total. A ₹40,000 inverter AC using ₹7,500 a year costs ₹1.22 lakh, so it saves ₹28,000 and its extra price pays back in about 2.3 years.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter how many years you will keep the product.
  2. For each option, add price, yearly running cost and maintenance.
  3. Use the appliance electricity cost calculator to estimate running cost.

Formula

Total cost = price + (running cost + maintenance) × years − resale value

Payback years = extra price ÷ yearly running cost saved

Running costs depend on your electricity tariff and usage. Use your own bill for the best estimate.
