Leave 1 to 2 feet of floor showing around a room-sized rug. In a 14 × 12 ft living room with an 18-inch border, the rug can be up to 11 × 9 ft, so a standard 8 × 10 ft rug fits well. Under a dining table, the rug should extend at least 2 feet beyond the table on every side so chairs stay on it.

Is a bigger rug always better?
