Quick answer

An electric scooter typically runs 25–35 km per unit of electricity, against 40–50 km per litre for a petrol scooter. At 1,000 km a month, ₹7 per unit and ₹103 per litre of petrol, the EV costs about ₹233 a month in electricity against about ₹2,290 for petrol, saving about ₹2,000 a month. If the EV costs ₹30,000 more, it pays back in roughly 15 months.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter how far you ride or drive each month.
  2. Enter your local petrol price and the petrol vehicle's real mileage.
  3. Enter EV efficiency (scooters 25–35 km/unit, cars 6–8 km/unit) and your electricity rate.

Formula

Petrol cost / month = km ÷ mileage × petrol price

EV cost / month = km ÷ km per unit × electricity rate

Payback (months) = Extra EV price ÷ Monthly saving

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to charge an electric scooter?
A 3 kWh scooter battery costs about ₹21 to charge fully at ₹7 per unit, and gives roughly 80–100 km of real-world range.
