Quick answer

Mileage = kilometres driven ÷ litres used. Fill the tank to full, reset the trip meter, drive normally, then fill to full again. If you drove 350 km and needed 25 litres to refill, your mileage is 14 km per litre. At ₹100 a litre that is ₹7.14 per km, or 7.1 litres per 100 km.

How to use this calculator

  1. Fill the tank until the nozzle clicks off and reset the trip meter.
  2. Drive as you normally do, ideally for more than 200 km.
  3. Fill to full at the same pump and enter the km and litres.

Formula

Mileage (km/l) = km driven ÷ litres refilled

Cost per km = fuel price ÷ mileage

Litres per 100 km = 100 ÷ mileage

Use the same pump and fill to the first click-off each time for consistent results.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my real mileage lower than the claimed mileage?
Claimed (ARAI) mileage is tested in fixed lab conditions. Traffic, AC, tyre pressure and driving style usually cut real mileage by 15–30%.
Is the mileage shown on the dashboard accurate?
Dashboard figures are often 5–10% optimistic. The full-tank method gives the true number.
How can I improve my mileage?
Keep tyres at the right pressure, drive smoothly between 50 and 80 km/h, and don't carry extra weight.
