Quick answer

Couriers charge the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight. In India most couriers and marketplaces use length × breadth × height in cm divided by 5,000 (some use 4,000 for express). A 30 × 25 × 10 cm box weighing 0.6 kg has a volumetric weight of 1.5 kg, so you pay for 1.5 kg, not 0.6 kg. Smaller boxes save money.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the packed box, not the product, in centimetres.
  2. Weigh the packed parcel.
  3. Pick the divisor your courier or marketplace uses.

Formula

Volumetric weight (kg) = Length × Breadth × Height (cm) ÷ 5,000

Chargeable weight = the higher of actual and volumetric weight, rounded up to the next 0.5 kg slab

Frequently asked questions

How is volumetric weight calculated?
Multiply length, breadth and height in centimetres and divide by 5,000. A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box is 24,000 ÷ 5,000 = 4.8 kg volumetric weight.
Why does my shipping cost more than the product weight?
Because light but bulky parcels are billed on volumetric weight. Use a smaller box or a poly mailer for soft goods like clothing.
