BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. For Indian adults, health bodies use lower cut-offs than the global WHO scale: 18.5–22.9 is normal, 23–24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese. For example, 65 kg at 1.68 m is a BMI of 23.0, which is overweight on the Asian-Indian scale.
| Category | Asian-Indian BMI | WHO global BMI |
|---|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 | Below 18.5 |
| Normal | 18.5–22.9 | 18.5–24.9 |
| Overweight | 23–24.9 | 25–29.9 |
| Obese | 25 and above | 30 and above |
BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis. Talk to a doctor before you change your diet or exercise.
