Quick answer

Match the watch case to your wrist circumference. For a classic watch, wrists under 15 cm suit 28–34 mm cases, 15–16.5 cm suit 34–38 mm, 16.5–18 cm suit 38–40 mm, 18–19 cm suit 40–42 mm and larger wrists 42–44 mm. Go one step bigger for sporty watches. A 17 cm wrist suits a 38–40 mm classic or 40–42 mm sports watch. Standard straps fit about 16–20 cm wrists.

How to measure

  1. Wrap a tape or paper strip just below your wrist bone, where the watch sits.
  2. Mark where it overlaps and measure the length.
  3. Pick the look you want; bold and smart watches can go one step bigger.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 42 mm watch too big for a small wrist?
On wrists under 16.5 cm, a 42 mm case often hangs over the wrist edges. A 38–40 mm case looks more balanced.
What size smartwatch should I buy?
Smartwatches are measured differently, but in general pick the smaller model (around 40–41 mm) for wrists under 16.5 cm and the larger (44–46 mm) above 18 cm.
Can I shorten a metal watch strap?
Yes. Any watch shop can remove links from a metal bracelet in a few minutes.
