Quick answer

Skirts sit on the waist, so size by waist first. Fitted pencil skirts must also fit your hips, so take the larger of the two sizes. A-line, flared and wrap skirts only need the waist to fit. A 30-inch waist is size M (waist size 30). For length, at 160 cm a knee-length skirt is about 23 inches and a midi about 30 inches, measured from the waist.

How to measure

  1. Measure your waist where you will wear the skirt, usually just above the belly button.
  2. Measure the fullest part of your hips with your feet together.
  3. Add your height and choose the style and length you want.

Frequently asked questions

How is skirt length measured?
From the waistband straight down to the hem, at the side seam. Product pages usually list it as "length".
What skirt length suits short women?
Knee-length and just-below-knee skirts flatter most heights under 5'3". Midis look best when they end at the narrowest part of the calf.
Do skirt sizes match jeans sizes?
Close, but not always. A size 30 skirt has a 30-inch waist; jeans of the same number may sit lower on the hip.
