Women's tops are sized by bust: measure around the fullest part with the tape level across your back. In Indian brands a 34-inch bust is S, 36 is M and 38 is L, which is UK 8, 10 and 12. For a slim-fit top, size up if you are within half an inch of the next size. Relaxed and oversized tops are cut loose, so your usual size already gives that look.

A 36-inch (91 cm) bust is size M in most Indian brands, UK 10, US 6 and EU 38.
Is a top size the same as a kurti size?
Mostly yes, since both are sized by bust. Kurtis also list hip size, so check your hips if the kurti is fitted below the waist.
Should I size up for cotton tops?
Pure cotton can shrink 3–5% in the first wash. If you are at the top of a size, go one size up or wash in cold water.
